When most people hear the words “Teflon coating spray” they immediately think of the non-stick coating on higher-end pots and pans.
But in the industrial world Teflon serves a very different and important purpose. Simply put, the use of the right or wrong Teflon coating spray can make or break your machinery.
Using the wrong Teflon on your industrial machines can have disastrous results, including damage that can be very costly to repair.
The halt in your production process can cost even more.
Here are 6 basic types of Teflon coating sprays that are commonly used in industries. Which one works best for your needs?
1. Teflon PTFE
This type of Teflon coating spray is one of the most popular on the market.
PTFE, or polytetrafluoroethylene (say that out loud 5 times fast) contains a primer and a top coat to create a smooth non-stick surface.
Need a Teflon that can withstand high temperatures? This one is a great choice. It can handle heat up to around 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
PTFE boasts a low friction coefficient and easily resists acidic and alkaline chemicals and abrasions.
It comes only in a liquid form and is water based.
2. Teflon PFA
PFA, or perfluoroalkoxy can also handle temperatures of up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. It is a bit stronger than PTFE and can withstand quite a bit more daily abuse.
It comes in a liquid, water based form as well as a powder.
3. Teflon FEP
FEP is your best option if you need a non-porous film.
Short for fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer, FEP goes through a process of baking where the film flows and melts into an ultra-slick surface.
It’s highly resistant to many of the most common industrial chemicals and can also handle temperatures similar to PFA and PTFE.
Like PFA, it comes in a water based liquid and powder forms.
4. Tefzel ETFE
This is the strongest fluoropolymer available on the market today. Teflon also makes this product and markets it under the Telzel name.
Because this coating is not fully flourinated, it serves a very needed purpose in many industrial applications.
Tefzel ETFE does not come in water-based form, however. You can only get it as a powder.
5. Teflon Coating Spray – One Coat
One Coat is a solvent based coating that is needed in some industrial applications.
It is quite tough and resists abrasions with ease.
One of the biggest benefits of using One Coat is that it will often stick to metal surfaces that are very smooth. This is not true about other Teflon coating sprays which need to adhere to a rougher surface.
6. Teflon Dry Lubricant
Use Dry Lubricant if your application has high pressure and velocities.
It is also a solvent based lubricant, similar to One Coat. The key difference is that Dry Lubricant was designed specifically for those high pressure and velocity situations.
Conclusion
Choosing the right Teflon coating spray is an important application-by-application decision.
